I'm very fascinated with all the different Hall of Fames that people have started to recognize their profession. But there is no Hall of Fame that is more fascinating that the National Toy Hall of Fame. I'm 27 years old but I'm not ashamed to admit that I love toys and I love the idea of a National Toy Hall of Fame.
The National Toy Hall of Fame recognizes the contributions of toys and games that have sustained their popularity for many years. The National Toy Hall of Fame started in Salem, Oregon in 1998 but has since been moved to Rochester, New York in 2002.
The following toys are some of the 39 toys that have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame so far:
Atari 2600 - In 2007, the Atari 2600 was the first video game console inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Hopefully it' only a matter of time before the original Nintendo is inducted.
Cardboard box - I know that kids often open their toys and then just play with the box it came in but I didn't know that qualifies it for the National Toy Hall of Fame.
Checkers - I love Checkers. Besides being fun it's also a lot easier than chess.
Crayola Crayons - This toy has ended up on walls more than any toy in history. Now it will be on the walls of the National Toy Hall of Fame.
Etch-A-Sketch - the Etch-A-Sketch is a harsh toy. When you're a kid and you play with it you don't possess the art skills to make anything good. When you're old enough to make something good you're too old to be playing with toys.
G. I. Joe - G. I. Joe might be my favorite all-time toys but I imagine this is actually referring to the original G. I. Joes that were before my time.
Kite - The kite was just added in 2007. I've never been a big kite fan. I think I had one or two but I have never actually flown one in my entire life.
Jigsaw Puzzle - Now the jigsaw puzzle is my kind of thinking toy. Something like chess is no fun because you can get your butt kicked but Jigsaw puzzle is just all fun.
Lego - Not only are Legos one of the best toys ever but they've now branched out to video games.
Monopoly - Monopoly: The best game that nobody ever finishes.
Mr. Potato Head - Mr. Potato Head is a classic that got stale for a while but has been rejuvenated since they started making different versions like the Darth Vader Potato Head and the Spider-man Potato Head.
Play-Doh - If there was a wing in the National Toy Hall of Fame for toys that taste good then Play-doh would have to be the first inductee.
Scrabble - It was always my dream to spell Scrabble while playing Scrabble but it never happened once.
Teddy Bear - The Teddy Bear will never get old.
