What Are Bodyweight

Excercises?

 

Bodyweight exercises are any physical exercise that do not require any additional weights. It's where you're able to do muscle-building exercises without the need for additional weights. Usually, the only weight needed is the weight of your body.

Bodyweight exercises can be just as effective as weight-bearing and weight-lifting exercises. For example, people like Charles Atlas, soldiers, gymnasts, martial artists, and guys like us have been building strong, fit bodies through bodyweight exercises for years.

Compared to bodybuilding, a case can be made against bodybuilding: whereas bodyweight training focuses on real strength, a lot of bodybuilding is focused on size, and not necessarily strength. Sure, bodybuilders are strong (I know because I used to be one), but people who use bodyweight exercises usually have stronger muscle fibers, even though they're not as big as those of a bodybuilder's.

Although bodyweight exercises require no weight other than that of your body there are 3 reasons why additional equipment may be used for some bodyweight exercises:

  1. Stability and balance (you may want to use a wall wall to balance yourself for the Superman push-ups)

  2. Necessity (chin-up bar for chin-ups, pull-up bar for pull-ups)

  3. To make an exercise more challenging

Additional equipment is usually easy to find to find around the home, or easy to improvise. They can also be purchased.

For some exercises, no extra equipment is needed. These include push-ups, superman push-ups, “pistols”, and the burpees (which are a 5-count exercise).

Bodyweight exercises can be done virtually anywhere. Although most gyms have the equipment that you need for the exercises that require them, you may not absolutely need a gym, since the equipment is fairly easy to come by.
